The Poppy Field is a location and arch anomaly in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
Background
This anomalous field of bright red poppies is actually a very subversive anomaly: One that causes people exposed to it to fall asleep and drift oft into permanent death.
Points of interest
The anomaly is a vast field of flowers that is scripted to trigger sleep. Staying for too long in the anomaly will result in Skif passing away and dying, which puts a hard limit on the amount of time you can spend in it at any one time. While there are energy drinks stashed across the area, the most important spot is the root cellar with the religious icon used to complete the quest.
Characters
- Pomor: A scavenger living off the loot claimed from the bodies of stalkers who perish in the anomaly.
Notable loot
- Weird Flower: A blue flower located in the flower field to the west of the derelict house.
- Unknown Stalker's AR416: Received from Pomor in exchange for the icon.
- Tactical Pistol Silencer: Found in a backpack on top of the southern house's porch, laying against the attic's frame.
PDAs and Notes
- Note with Instructions
- Pomor's PDA
Notable Stashes
- Energy Drink Stash: Found directly south of the Poppy Field, laying on the side of a ZIL-130 truck. Contains the Note with Instructions, and multiple NON STOP Energy Drinks. Taking and/or leaving items in this Stash can cause unique reactions from Buckwheat at Zalissya.
- Poppy Field Stash: In a blue trunk within the boarded up barn's attic, southeast of the Poppy Field. Inside is a TOZ-34 and ammo.
Trivia
- Red poppy seed pods naturally contain opioid derivatives like morphine and codeine. The sedating effect of the Poppy Field is likely caused by airborne opiates released by the plants in abnormally large quantities, enough to be fatal with prolonged exposure. It is possible the Zone's anomaly-forming abilities caused the Poppy Field to overproduce those chemicals over time.
- The Poppy Field seems to be inspired by a Ukrainian folklore tale about Pecheneg raiders who tried to capture and enslave female inhabitants of a village they've besieged. However, they failed to catch any, as each one turned into a poppy flower before successful capture. Grown tired of the chase, the tribesmen eventually fell asleep in the resulting poppy field and never woke up.
