Awl to Petruha
noicon

Awl (Shilo / Шило) is a Loner who appears in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat and in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.

Background

Awl is a friend of Petruha, who met him at some point during his expedition to Zaton. Petruha acts as a mentor figure for the Rookie Awl, teaching him how to survive in the Zone. Upon arrival to Zaton, the two were poor, but ended up becoming pretty decent artifact hunters. After amassing some amount of money, the two pooled their money together to buy a new suit capable of reliably protecting them while exploring anomalous areas but could only afford one Sunrise suit, which Petruha wears.

Appearances

Call of Pripyat

Personality

Awl is a somewhat cowardly (asks Major Degtyarev for help due to fear of being incinerated) but also very fierce and emotional rookie. He cares deeply for his best friend Petruha, and is shown to be very helpful and friendly. He is a decent shot with his Hunting rifle. Despite his caring and non-confrontational nature, when he is angry, he is shown to be a force to be reckoned with, even forcing Major Degtyarev to back off. He is shown to be pretty good at hunting artifacts, which can be seen if he and Petruha live when they travel to new anomalies. A rookie with a heart of gold.

Biography

Awl appears near the proximity of the Boiler anomaly in Zaton, watching over Petruha as he is hunting for artifacts. Petruha at first is a little reluctant to tempt his luck on the anomaly field, but Awl cheers him on to try, eventually resulting in Petruha being incapacitated when he triggers one of the boilers.

Attitude

When Petruha is injured, Awl calls over for Degtyarev’s help. He gives him a medkit and asks him to help Petruha. Degtyarev can agree or refuse. If Degtyarev leaves, Petruha dies, and if he helps, he lives, but there are multiple other choices that change Awl’s disposition towards you as well.

Good

Option 1: If Degtyarev saves Petruha while being neutral between the Loners and Bandits, Petruha and Awl will instantly consider you to be their friend and closest ally. They will assist you in combat and be on great terms with you.

Option 2: If Degtyarev saves Petruha and is A Friend of Stalkers, Petruha and Awl will not only be on great terms with Degtyarev, but actively seek to assist him in any way. They will teleport nearby if Degtyarev is in combat in Zaton, and fully repay their debt to you by being great friends.

Option 3: If Degtyarev left Petruha to die but is A Friend of Stalkers, Awl will hate Degtyarev but understand him to be an ally of their cause. He will teleport nearby and assist Degtyarev in combat, but refuse to speak to him and even punch Degtyarev if conversation is attempted.

Option 4: If Degtyarev left Petruha to die but is One of Ours, Awl will hate Degtyarev, but know he is a useful asset. If he is nearby when Degtyarev is in combat, he will assist, but still refuse to speak to Degtyarev and punch him.

Neutral

Option 5: If Degtyarev saved Petruha, but is a Boss with the Bandits and also a Diplomat, Awl will be neutral with Degtyarev. He will be thankful that his best friend’s life was saved, but not actively seek to help Degtyarev in any way. In fact, he may even refuse to communicate with Degtyarev, and punch him if pestered.

Option 6: If one took the medkit and left Petruha to die while being neutral with Bandits and Loners, Awl will despise Degtyarev, not being hostile, but truly angry. If Degtyarev attempts to speak to him, Awl will tell Degtyarev to leave now. He talks about how Degtyarev let Petruha die, and that Petruha was twice the man that Degtyarev could ever be. If more conversation is attempted, he will punch Degtyarev. He will not associate with you.

Hostile

Option 7: If Degtyarev saved Petruha, but is a Boss who has brought nothing but pain to his fellow Stalkers, Petruha and Awl will realize that Degtyarev is not their friend. Petruha will not speak with Degtyarev at all in neutral areas, punching him if speech is attempted, and outside neutral areas, he and Awl will attempt to kill Degtyarev.

Option 8: If Degtyarev left Petruha to die, and is a Boss with the Bandits who has done nothing but bring pain to his fellow Stalkers, Awl will actively hunt Degtyarev. He will refuse to speak to him on Skadovsk, punching him, and outside of Skadovsk will attempt to get revenge for everything you have done, trying to kill you.

Heart of Chornobyl

Following the military's evacuation from Pripyat, Awl and Petruha continue to live within the Zone. At some point, they find themselves a refuge in an old water tower. After they have settled in, Skif arrives at the tower some time later. As Skif attempts to gain entry, Petruha opens the door to the stranger himself and, aiming a shotgun at him, demands to know who he is. Skif introduces himself, and Petruha lowers his weapon. He informs Awl of their guest. Awl, with a pair of binoculars hanging around his neck, nods silently and heads up the stairs. Petruha suggests that the stalker spend the night in the tower; they then turn in for the night, as it had been Awl’s turn "on watch" that day.

The next morning, Petruha wakes Skif, leads him up to the second floor of the tower, and shows him the view from there. The player spots the dogs and alerts Petruha. Agitated, Petruha tells Awl to take a look through his binoculars. Awl discovers that the mutants are blind dogs and hands the binoculars to Skif. After taking a look, Skif attempts to return the binoculars to Awl, but Awl refuses; Petruha then exclaims admiringly, "Keep the binoculars—they're yours, Eagle Eye!" Next, Petruha asks Awl if he saw anyone during the night, but Awl reports that he saw no one. They then decide to head into the town, and Awl begins dismantling the barricades blocking the entrance.

Skif sets off toward the town alongside the stalkers. As they make their way between the structures on the lakeshore, their path is blocked by an aggressive pack of dogs. The dogs do not immediately attack, but they growl menacingly. The rest of the pack surrounds the squad from all sides. Finally, two large dogs appear standing some distance away; the moment they come into view, one of the dogs attacks. Petruha shoots it down and shouts for Awl and Skif to open fire on the pack leaders. During the firefight with the mutants, the squad focuses their fire on the leaders. As soon as the first one falls, the second charges into the fray. Once the second leader is killed, the rest of the pack flees. Petruha cuts the ears off the dead dogs and suggests the player do the same, explaining that the Duty faction pays a handsome bounty for proof of dangerous mutant kills.

As they approach the town, the squad spots several rusted-out train cars sitting amidst a cloud of rusty dust. In the center stands a crumbling lead car, looking as if it has half-sunk into the rust itself. Petruha explains that this is the "Rust" anomaly. At that moment, Awl is searching the anomaly for artifacts, and after a short while, he locates some. Petruha then suggests that Skif venture into the anomaly to retrieve some artifacts. Skif agrees, and Petruha begins offering advice. Awl hands the player a detector, while Petruha provides a gas mask fitted with old filters. Petruha nudges the player into the anomaly and explains how it—and the detector—function. Skif locates a Crystal artifact and exits the anomaly. Petruha proposes trading the artifact in exchange for the detector and gas mask. Afterward, the player bids farewell to Petruha and Awl; the pair heads north toward the Hospital, while the player sets off for the 100 Rads Bar.
